Creating Spaces That Support Student Growth: Flexible Seating in Our Jr/Sr Classroom

At Bayside Academy, we believe the learning environment should be just as dynamic as the students we serve. That belief comes to life every day in our Jr/Sr classroom, where flexible seating options give students the power to choose how—and where—they learn best.

Walk into the room, and you’ll find more than just desks and whiteboards. Couches invite casual collaboration. Beanbags and butterfly chairs offer cozy corners for quiet reading or focused reflection. Traditional tables and chairs provide structure for direct instruction or independent work.

This intentional mix of seating supports more than comfort—it supports autonomy, engagement, and academic growth. In fact, research suggests that giving students choice in their learning environment can improve focus, motivation, and overall well-being (Barrett et al., 2015, Clever Classrooms study).

Students at Bayside learn to recognize how they work best, and they’re given the freedom to make those choices daily. Whether prepping a group project, journaling through a history prompt, or taking a brain break after a deep dive into STEM, our learners are equipped with the environment to thrive.

In a micro school setting like Bayside, flexibility isn’t a perk—it’s part of the plan.
